THERE IS A BRILLIANT CHILD INSIDE EVERY STUDENT.

LESSON PLANS November 26, 2008

Trees and leaves

Supplies:
Paper
glue
markers
forest or outdoor area
books about different types of trees

Activity:
Take children outside and let them look for leaves. Have them find and collect at least 2 different types of leaves. Have them bring them inside and then glue them to their white paper. Then proceed to show them books on different types of leaves and ask them “How are you going to know what kind of tree your leaf belongs to? Try to get them to answer color, shape, design etc… Explain to them that they are using classification to identify the correct tree of the leaf. After they feel they have the correct type of tree have them explain how they came to that conclusion. Then when you know they are correct have them write the tree down on their paper. If the children write in journals have them write about what they did and if they were correct in their findings!

Objectives: To look at different leaves and learn what type of tree they belong too by looking at their characteristics. Looking at shape, size, color and pattern the veins make on the leaf.

 Technology needed:

Kidspiration

Digital camera

Smart board

1) Each student will make a Kidspiration about the different types of leaves the students have found. We will use the books we have about leaves to find information out about the leaves and the trees the leaves come from.

2) We will take pictures of the leaves and of the tree they came from.  After the pictures are taken, we will upload them to the computer and display them on the Smart board. Each child will then go to the Smart board and talk about the leaves they found and present information about he leaves and the tress.

Software and Hardware used:

The software being used is Kidspiration. The hardware is the digital camera, and the smart board.

Skills Required:

The teacher will need to understand how to help the children build a Kidspiration web.  She will also need to know how to work the digital camera and how to use the Smart board.

The students will need to understand how Kidspiration works.  If the students take pictures with the digital camera they will need to understand how to focus the camera and take the picture.

Reflection:

The Kidspiration will help the students to understand where the leaves came from.  They are looking through books to find their leaves and information about the trees and leaves to add to the Kidspiration.

The digital camera will be used to take pictures of the leaves.   The pictures will be shown on the Smart board and the child can tell their classmates about leaves during their presentation.  Since the students will be finding information from the books, they will also be including the information on the Smart board presentation.

Title – Glitter Germs

Objective:

· Students will have a concrete example as to why they should wash their hands with soap and warm water.
· Students will understand that germs are smaller than the eye can see.

Supplies:

Glitter
Paper Towels
Hand Lotion
Bucket (To catch glitter.)

Procedure: – (Be sure to ask students if any have allergies to hand lotion.)

1. Ask: What is a germ? How big is it? Why is it important to wash your hands?
2. Put a small amount of hand lotion in each student’s hands. Have them rub it all over their hands.
3. Sprinkle, over a bucket, a small amount of glitter into each student’s hands. Have them rub their hands to spread the glitter evenly.
4. Next, have a few kids try to get the glitter off with dry paper towel.
5. Then, have a few kids try to get the glitter off with plain, cold water. After that, have a few kids use warm water, with soap, to get the glitter germs off.
6. Let everyone wash his or her hands with warm, soapy water.
7. Bring everyone back to circle and ask, “What does the glitter represent (Germs)? What happened when you tried to get it off with just paper towels? Cold water? Warm, soapy water? Why is it important to properly wash your hands?”

Evaluation:

Assessment will be informally based on the Following Criteria:
· Students will demonstrate proper hand washing with warm, soapy water.
· Each student will understand that germs can be spread by not properly washing their hands.

Technology needed:

Computer with internet access

TV/DVD- Video

ELMO

       1)  The students will research and find out the answer to question #1.  To do this we would visit the website: http://www.sciencebuddies.com/science-fair-projects/project_ideas/MicroBio_p018.shtml?from=Home

      2) As a class we will watch a video that shows the children the proper hand washing techniques to remove as many germs as possible. The video will be from Crawford’s Corner: Crawford washes his hands.

      3)  A will have a child from each group to come up and place their hands under the ELMO so the entire class an see the germs, if any, that are left on their hands.

The hardware that will be needed:

The students will access the website to learn about germs.

A TV and DVD player is needed to watch the video on hand washing techniques.

The ELMO camera will be used to show the children in the classroom the germs that are left on the students’ hands.

    The skills needed:

The teachers needs to have computers available to the students. She will need to make sure the TV and DVD are connected properly, and she needs to know how to work the ELMO.

The students need to know how to access websites and how to display their hands  under the ELMO.

    Reflection:

By using the computer and websites the children will be able to research and understand what germs are. The video will demonstrate to the children how to properly wash their hands to remove germs, and the ELMO will let all of the children see how many germs are left.  By using the ELMO the entire class can see the “germs” magnified instead of having the student walk around and show their hands their classmates.
